Brief History of the Kiwanis Club of Richmond

Chartered March 26, 1945

On May 14th, 1945, at a charter dinner  held at the Hotel Vancouver, The Kiwanis Club of Richmond received its charter.  The club was sponsored by the Point Grey-Kerrisdale Kiwanis Club .  Pacific Northwest District Governor Frank Taylor, of Tacoma Washington, presented  E.H. Easterbrook the new clubs charter.

 

New Club Charter Gifts

Traditionally, a new club is presented with charter gifts by other members of the Kiwanis community.  The following clubs contirbuted to the celebration:

Richmond Kiwanis Seniors Housing Society chartered on September 21, 1959.

First phase consisting of 24 double units officially opened May 22, 1961 with 98 units to follow over the ensuing years.
 
Over the years the Kiwanis have supported the following community groups with financial assistance and participation:
  • Shaughnessy Military Hospital
  • Founded the first Boy’s Club in Steveston
  • Founded the first Air Cadet Squadron in Richmond which grew to two squadrons before being taken over by Air Canada and Canadian Pacific Air
  • Original Richmond Good Citizen Award before being taken over by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce
  • Instituted the school crossing guard program
  • Mothers March of Dimes
  • Donated the Richmond Health Care Centre (part of the original City Hall complex)  On August 9th ,1957 this centre was turned over to the Municipality of Richmond at a cost of $53,000. It was later used as business offices at the City Hall.
  • Performing Arts Festival
  • Donated computers and printers to the Vancouver Deaf Institute
  • Richmond Opportunities Workshop
  • Painting of the Richmond General Hospital Maternity Wards
  • Christmas Hampers
  • Lord Byng Elementary School Playground equipment
  • Richmond elementary school exchange programs
